West Brom 3-0 Chelsea: Ten-man champions battered by brilliant Baggies

first_img West Brom star Saido Berahino celebrates his second goal against Chelsea Premier League champions Chesea were beaten for only the third time this season as Saido Berahino led West Brom to a shock 3-0 victory in an entertaining clash at the Hawthorns.Jose Mourinho’s men won the top flight title at a canter but they were punished for taking their foot off the gas against a brilliant Baggies side, who took an early lead through a fine curling strike from Berahino.A lively first half stuttered to a close as players from both teams went into the referee’s book following a series of scrappy challenges and scuffles, with the Blues reduced to ten men when Cesc Fabregas was bizarrely sent off.It went from bad to worse for the visitors when Albion doubled their lead just minutes into the second half through a Berahino penalty. And, with Chelsea repeated frustrated by the Baggies’ solid back-four, Chris Brunt sealed a resounding win with a thumping long-range drive which beat Thibaut Courtois at his near post.Despite already having the title in the bag, Mourinho refused to field a weakened team, though 19-year-old Ruben Loftus-Cheek was handed only his second Premier League start, but a strong Blues side struggled against a typically resilient Baggies side. And it took just nine minutes for the hosts to take the lead; Chelsea’s defence sleeping as they allowed Berahino to turn on the edge of the box and let fly with a superb effort which curled beyond a stretching Courtois.Chelsea did eventually wake up, though, and Player of the Year Eden Hazard went close when, following a swift counter-attack, the Belgian’s close-range shot from an angle was tipped over by an in-form Boaz Myhill.Diego Costa, who Mourinho said ‘begged’ to play after over a month out with a hamstring problem, was not at his best and seemed to spent more time scrapping with his opponents than making any impact on the ball. And it was the striker’s short fuse which led to the series events which saw team-mate Fabregas sent off, with sparks began to fly with an initial scuffle between Costa and Gareth McAuley. The Spaniard was booked for the tangle, with replays showing that he leant in towards the Baggies man with his head, but it all kicked off when Fabregas – on the other side of the pitch – lobbed the ball into the huddle of players. His cheeky chip smacked into the head of Chris Brunt and the referee, along with an incensed West Brom skipper Darren Fletcher, was not impressed; sending the Spaniard down the tunnel for his antics. It seemed a harmless act but proved a reckless one as Chelsea now found themselves a goal, plus a man, down against a stubborn Baggies side. The Blues look rattled from the balmy incident and Albion took full advantage after the break, the hosts taking just two minutes to net their second.John Terry was fortunate to stay on the pitch after appearing to be the last man when he tripped Berahino with a late challenge, but he was still punished for his mistake as the Baggies winger slotted in from the spot.Chelsea enjoyed a brief moment of response but were denied by the woodwork as Loic Remy’s stinging 20-yard effort came back out off the post, but it lasted mere minutes as West Brom soon added a third though Brunt, who cut inside and left Courtois cursing himself in frustration with the Belgian beaten far too easily at his near post.Mourinho’s men struggled to create anything in the remaining 30 minutes, as West Brom treated their fans to a magnificent victory in their final home game of the season. 1last_img read more

Earth-Like Planet More Like a Lava Lamp

first_img(Visited 61 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0 It might be an interesting place to visit on Star Trek, but you wouldn’t want to live there.   Theoretically, it shouldn’t even exist. An exoplanet closest to our Earth in size has been discovered.  Trouble is, it’s being called a “lava world.”  It’s not clear why the press is getting so excited about it.  Science Magazine’s Science Shot leads off with, “Alien World Is More Earth-Like Than Any Found.”  Oh, really?  Only the condemned would want to go there, because “it’s more of a hellish cousin to Earth than a twin,” the article states.   Compared to those burning on Venus, they would have a grand view, though:The majority of these so-called exoplanets are gas giants—big balls of gas and dust that are several times larger in radius than Earth. But Kepler-78b [so named because of its discovery by the Kepler spacecraft] is only 80% more massive than Earth and 20% larger in radius, two groups of researchers report online today in Nature. That makes it about as dense as Earth and suggests that it is composed of rock and iron. But the object’s distance from its star (which is somewhat smaller than our sun) is only about twice the star’s radius, which means that the star would loom on the horizon like a gigantic disk, filling up a large part of the sky. Not a bad view, if you didn’t mind being burned to a crisp. That good-news, bad-news joke shields secular astrophysicists from a major problem for their planetary formation theories.  The BBC News noted that this “lava world” is “something of a puzzle.”  Indeed, “Lava World Baffles Astronomers: Planet Kepler-78b ‘Shouldn’t Exist’,” Science Daily whimpered.According to current theories of planet formation, it couldn’t have formed so close to its star, nor could it have moved there.“This planet is a complete mystery,” says astronomer David Latham of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). “We don’t know how it formed or how it got to where it is today. What we do know is that it’s not going to last forever.”The planet will soon plunge into the star, becoming one with its sky-filling view.  Why is it where it is? “It couldn’t have formed in place because you can’t form a planet inside a star,” said Dimitar Sasselov of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, where the smart guys think about these things.  “It couldn’t have formed further [sic] out and migrated inward, because it would have migrated all the way into the star. This planet is an enigma.”But it’s Earth-like, we are told by Live Science and Science Daily.  One qualifier: “Too hot to support life.”  The search goes on.It’s funny watching the secular naturalists at work.  Any hint of warmth in a gas cloud, and it must be “undergoing star formation.”  Any hint of the right density, and a planet is “Earthlike.”  Any possibility of water, and there must be “Life” there (see hydrobioscopy in the Darwin Dictionary). Some day they may find Earth’s twin: an Earth-size planet in the habitable zone (but see qualifiers for “habitable zone,” 9/19/13, 9/08/12).  This story shows they still are in la-va land, because they cannot make this planet exist in their theories.  Let them tell us how the planets they can see now came to be, and then we will be ready to discuss the next philosophical question.Meanwhile, we enjoyed the funnies: “You can’t form a planet inside a star,” and “Not a bad view, if you didn’t mind being burned to a crisp.”  They seem to do a better job at comedy than origin science.last_img read more

We will be heading due north for most of the day as we make our way to Rochester, Minnesota. Here are the final results for the entire eastern leg of this year’s Pro Farmer Midwest Crop Tour for Iowa.Corn –188.17 bushels to the acre Soybeans – 1224.28 pods in a 3 x 3 foot square Here are the final results for the entire eastern leg of this year’s Pro Farmer Midwest Crop Tour for Minnesota.Corn –182.32 bushels to the acre Soybeans – 1107.60 pods in a 3 x 3 foot square Olmstead County, MinnesotaThis is our final stop of the Pro Farmer Midwest Crop Tour. After 5 years, this is just as fun for me as it was in 2012. Always great to see all of the other scouts I have gotten to know over the years and meet new ones from all over the world. The corn here was a nice way to end the week. The field was still plenty green and hearty and the ears were filled very nicely and the yield was 217.Soybeans will not be too good here but one plant did come in with 110 pods. Our total pod count here for a 3 x 3 square was 1018.Olmstead County, MinnesotaOlmstead County, MinnesotaFillmore County, MinnesotaThis are just got a lot of rain. Right before we crossed the state line we passed house after house siphoning water out of the basements and the rising river didn’t do the corn or soybean crops any favors just south of this stop (See picture below). Our bushel count for this corn in Minnesota is 187.Soybeans were very mature and only had slight SDS. These were better than our average today at 1565 pods in a 3 foot square.Decorah, IowaFillmore County, MinnesotaWinneshiek County, IowaThis could was really good, but could be great in the end. One of our sample rows had a major skip hurting our pop calculations. Our yield here is 205.More SDS in beans here, but these beans are in good shape otherwise. Our pod count is 1467.Winneshiek County, IowaWinneshiek County, IowaFayette County, IowaFound some more worm feeding in this field, but the ears were very good and our yield was 199.Soybeans were the best we’ve seen today. No SDS here and stand looks very health. A 1530 pod count was found here.Fayette County, IowaClayton County, IowaEasily the best corn we’ve seen today. This farmer was aggressive with his pops and the ears have some weight to them. Our yield calc here is a solid 241.Soybeans were looking good too. Big bushy field here with high pod counts per plant and no SDS as of yet. Our pod count here was 1255 in a 3 x 3 foot square.Clayton County, IowaClayton County, IowaDelaware County, IowaRan into the farmer here and he said they have been 4 inches short of rain this year. Our yield proves it at 149.Soybeans were just okay as we got a pod count of 1003 in a 3 x 3 foot square. Some of our pod samples had SDS and the lower pods weren’t going to be there much longer.Delaware County, IowaDelaware County, IowaJones County, IowaThe ears here just aren’t what they were in Illinois yesterday. Our lengths are from 6 to 7 inches. Population was average here and our yield check here is 182. Found corn ear worm here too. (See picture below)Tall beans aren’t always good beans and these beans prove that. Our pod count here in a 3 x 3 square is 1050.Jones County, IowaJones County, IowaJones County, IowaLinn County, IowaCorn is not quite as good up the road one county. If corn is tipping back a little, the farmer is doing the right thing with population, but he may have left some on the table this year. Our estimated yield here is 162.1235 is our pod count here but SDS is only getting worse as we go.Linn County, IowaLinn County, IowaLinn County, IowaJohnson County, IowaThis was a solid field to start the day. Our ear count here was 98 and ears were filled nicely. Our estimate here is 182.Soybeans are showing signs of SCS here too. After talking with some agronomist last night, we will see SDS throughout Iowa and they are concerned with what the disease might do to the overall crop. Goa CM’s appearance in public not a stunt: BJP

first_imgThe Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday rejected the criticism that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s visit to an under-construction bridge to inspect on-going works on the outskirts of the city on Sunday was a “stunt”.Goa State unit BJP general secretary Sadanand Shet Tanavde said at a press conference here that Congress leaders would not be allowed to meet the Chief Minister from now on because of “the inhuman politics played by the Opposition party over his health”. “There is no question of a stunt. If we had to do a stunt, it could have been done 15 days or a month ago. Court matter is different and this is different,” Mr. Tanavde said in reply to queries if the surprise appearance was the result of a pending petition before the Bombay High Court at Goa, filed by a local politician, in which a formal medical examination of the Chief Minister has been sought as also a public declaration of his health status. “But the manner in which the Congress played politics with his health is inhuman. If the Congress had sought an appointment from us, we would have considered it. But they did not. All they wanted to do was indulge in politics. Now we will not allow them a meeting with CM,” Mr. Tanavde reiterated.last_img read more
