Forlán offers not to charge for the duration of the pandemic

In addition, he has asked that the rest of the technical body do collect his salary. The former Villarreal and Atlético player puts his work colleagues and players before him. The gesture provides a breath of air to the coffers of the club at a difficult time, in which the effects of the coronavirus wreak havoc. Forlan It is time to lean on the shoulder. The crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic is also shaking the economy, also in football. The break has put many on the edge of the precipice and it is time to reach agreements between clubs and squads for the survival of the entities. In commemoration of Africa Day, Spanish Ambassador Expresses Country’s Commitment to Working with Africa

first_imgThe Government of Spain through its Foreign Ministry has vowed its commitment to working with Africa in ensuring peace and security for both Spanish and African nationals on the continent.A dispatch from the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain, Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo to the African Union in commemoration of Africa Day on May 25 underscores Spain’s diplomatic history with Africa and expresses interest in collaborating with the continent in building mutual policies that will smoothen trade and social interactions. The dispatch indicates, “Spain actively supports the cause of peace and security on the continent.  We are the country that has contributed the highest number of troops to the EU Commission in Mali.  We are also present in Niger, Somalia and the Central African Republic, and we are combating piracy by means of Operation Atalanta.”According to the Spanish Foreign Minister in the dispatch, he said his country is active in conflict prevention, noting that together with Morocco they recently launched a mediation initiation for the Mediterranean where countries there are engulfed by conflict.Currently Egypt and Libya are in serious crises with religious instability threatening the lives of many people in Egypt while transition from Muhammar Ghadefi’s leadership in Libya has still not brought peace into that country.Acknowledging Spain’s concern of accompanying the processes of democratic governance, Minister Garcia-Margallo recalled that in 2012 his country initiated the Masar program in North Africa and promised that they will soon launch what he refers to as APIA program to promote inclusive policies in sub-Sahara Africa.“We have instruments of public diplomacy, such as Casa Africa, Casa Arabe and Casa Mediterraneano, to deepen mutual understanding.  Our ties and commitment to the continent will be strengthened as the society of our country comes to have a greater knowledge and understanding of Africa,” the Foreign Minister said.In the European Union, the Minister said “Spain has promoted numerous initiatives, such as the strategy for the Sahel and the strategy for the Gulf of Guinea.  In 2007-2013, we contributed 7.85% of the funds for the 10th European Development Fund (EDF) and we shall provide 8% for the 11th Fund (2014-2018), and we are also actively involved in the negotiation process to sign trade partnership agreements.Spain is one European country that Africans have over the time migrated to seek greener pasture due to what they claim as “Economic hardship” on the continent. Many had crossed the Mediterranean to Spain and other European countries while a lot of them had drowned in the sea. With respect to constant migration of Africans, Foreign Minister Garcia-Margallo said, “We have promoted policies on migration issues, such as the EU Global Approach to Migration, and we are involved in all the processes aimed at controlling migratory flows such as the Rabat Process, Mobility Partnerships and the Africa-EU Partnership on Migration, Mobility and Employment.”In closing, the Spanish Foreign Minister acknowledged Spain’s role in Africa and expressed wish that they will go further, promising to be excellent ambassadors of Africa if in the period of 2015-2016 Spain can occupy a seat on the UN Security Council.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_img 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! VERO BEACH, Fla. – Former Dodgers pitcher Clem Labine, who as recently as three weeks ago was in uniform at Dodgertown participating in the club’s annual fantasy camp, died Friday after a brief illness. He was 80. Labine appeared in 513 major-league games over a 13-year career, the vast majority of them as a reliever. He was with the Dodgers from 1950-60, a stretch that included the team’s move from Brooklyn to Los Angeles and ended when Labine was traded to Detroit. Labine had been a regular instructor at those camps for years. Labine appeared in five World Series with the Dodgers, winning titles with them in 1955 and 1959. He appeared in four games in that 1955 Series, the first championship in franchise history, going 1-0 with a 2.89 ERA. “Clem Labine was one of the main reasons the Dodgers won it all in 1955,” Dodgers Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully said. “He had the heart of a lion and the intelligence of a wily fox. He was a nice guy, too. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.” Labine reportedly had been hospitalized since Feb. 13 because of pneumonia and slipped into a coma following brain surgery. center_img He had a career record of 77-56 with 96 saves and an ERA of 3.63. He pitched in an era when there was little glamor to working out of the bullpen and a time when almost all pitchers aspired to start. “I always thoguht Clem would have had a great career as a starting pitcher,” former teammate Carl Erskine said in a release issued by the Dodgers. “But he told me, `I didn’t want to start. I liked the pressure of coming into the game with everything on the line.” last_img

Crunch time for Evergrande in Chinese Super League

first_imgWith a third of the season left, Beijing Guoan lead the CSL, two points clear of Shanghai SIPG and three ahead of Evergrande — and with a game in hand over both.Cannavaro’s side host the capital club on Friday knowing they could go top with victory, then travel to SIPG on Tuesday. The title chase is too close to call but Evergrande have impetus after dragging themselves back into contention thanks largely to the July loan signings of Brazilian midfielders Paulinho, from Barcelona, and Anderson Talisca, from Benfica.Evergrande needed a 91st-minute winner to defeat mid-table Shanghai Shenhua 2-1 in their last match and Cannavaro is pleading for home fans — so used to success, after dominating the CSL for the best part of a decade — to stay patient.“The supporters hope to win every game 4-0 or 5-0,” said the former world player of the year, after Evergrande’s last-gasp victory.“But fortunately we are still in the title race and have not been left behind,” Cannavaro added, praising the unity and will of his team.– ‘Hear a different voice’ –Cannavaro, Italy’s captain and defensive stalwart in their 2006 World Cup victory, will hope that his domestic players do not suffer a hangover from the international break.Three of his men started China’s drab 0-0 draw with Bahrain on Monday, a hugely disappointing result which sparked another bout of soul-searching about the under-achieving national side. That followed a similarly demoralising 1-0 defeat to Qatar, but Cannavaro said in the build-up that playing for China under his fellow Italian coach Marcello Lippi would be beneficial for his players — “to hear a different voice other than mine”.Evergrande go into the clash with Guoan in rampaging form, winning eight of their last nine CSL matches and averaging nearly four goals per game.Only Guoan have scored more goals this season but Roger Schmidt’s side are unconvincing at the back, suggesting that a goal-fest could be in the offing for an anticipated crowd of about 50,000.It is then off to Shanghai for Cannavaro’s men and the visit to SIPG, home of the expensive Brazilian duo Hulk and Oscar.SIPG coach Vitor Pereira took over from his fellow Portuguese national Andre Villas-Boas this season, vowing to do what the former Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea manager failed to achieve — win a trophy. The CSL is Pereira’s last chance after SIPG exited the Chinese FA Cup and the Asian Champions League.Like Cannavaro, Pereira has little room for further error.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Fabio Cannavaro is hoping to steer Guangzhou Evergrande to their eighth straight Chinese Super League title. © AFPSHANGHAI, China, Sep 13 – Fabio Cannavaro’s Guangzhou Evergrande face a critical five days that could go a long way towards deciding who wins the Chinese Super League’s most closely contested title race in years. The stakes could hardly be higher for the Italian World Cup winner, as failure to steer Evergrande to an eighth successive CSL crown would put his job under severe scrutiny after only a year in charge.last_img read more
